IEME at the Olympics
The Deodoro Sports Complex, located in Vila Militar in Rio de Janeiro, hosted 11 Olympic sports and four Paralympic sports during the 2016 Games.
The structures of the bleachers are frequently subjected to dynamic requests caused by the movement of the public during games, presentations or shows. In these events, the request is usually imposed in a “rhythmic” way and, as a consequence, the structure is subjected to cyclic displacements at certain frequencies resulting in vibrations.
Depending on the intensity, this phenomenon can cause discomfort to users and, in an extreme situation, public panic and structural impairment. For these reasons, tests were carried out in order to characterize the dynamic behavior of the provisional stands at Complexo de Deodoro.
